Creator of axed Netflix series teases epic return five years after shock cancellation sparked outrage from fans

THE mind behind a hit 2019 Netflix drama series has teased that he is trying to find ways to bring the beloved series back after fans begged for ‘closure’ following the programme’s shock cancellation. 

Show bosses and the streaming service received massive backlash from viewers after The Society ended on an almighty cliffhanger.

Now, five years after the release of season one, disappointed fans might be in for a treat with a brand new instalment in the works.

The beloved Netflix series aired on the streaming platform in May 2019 with ten nail-biting episodes. 

The eerie thriller followed a group of unsuspecting teenagers who were displaced from their hometown while on a school trip and thrown into an identical realm with no adult supervision.

Kathryn Newton, Gideon Adlon, Olivia DeJonge, Toby Wallace and Jacques Colimon played the leading cast of teens, who desperately sought to understand their predicament and how their lives had changed in the blink of an eye.

The teens quickly established their new community and created rules to maintain law and order. 

However, not long after the group settled, things started spiralling out of control, ending in a Lord of the Flies-style cliffhanger.

Viewers learned that the parents of the teens were still alive and well in ‘reality’ and believed that their children had somehow died.

Since the finale of the first series of The Society concluded, viewers have questioned where the school buses transporting the students went after vanishing into thin air and whether the two timelines would ever link again.

TV bosses initially renewed the programme for a second season, but it never came to fruition.

Since the show’s axing, fans have scrutinised creator Christopher Keyser’s social media comments about another outing.

They have taken to X and begged Netflix to release more episodes so they could get their much-needed ‘closure’.

One user pleaded: “Bring the entire cast back and continue on, we as a society will ignore the fact they’ve aged.”

“OH MY GOD?! Please I’m begging, I’ve literally never wanted a show to return more than The Society. I need closure!” a second person agreed.

The season one finale ended with many questions in viewers’ minds[/caption]

A third viewer raged: “We were robbed. This show was renewed then cancelled when it should have been placed on delay. We deserve another season.”

Another begged:  “Even if it’s one more season FINE! Just tell us WTF happened in that town.”

While someone else followed it with: ‘When I say I would sell my soul for this! It would be my biggest win.”

Show bosses later revealed that The Society was eventually cancelled due to the global pandemic. 

Even though years have passed since the last outing, fans’ calls for more episodes have not gone unheard. 

Touched by the huge response the first season received, Creator Christopher Keyse teased that those behind the camera are always trying to find ways to move the story forward.

It was even revealed that viewers were almost close to getting new episodes in the form of a graphic novel before the publishing company liquidated. 

“This wasn’t a normal cancellation. This wasn’t about not having the audience, or we didn’t believe in it anymore,” Christopher informed Variety.

“There was a global crisis that changed all of our lives in the one year we were able to make it. 

“I have consistent conversations with a bunch of the writers and Marc Webb [executive producer] about how we might bring this back in some way. 

“We don’t have an answer yet, and I wouldn’t count on it, but I don’t do that with every show that gets cancelled.”

He added: “The audience still wants to talk about it. They are still moved by it and want answers to the questions and then new questions are posed. 

“I just don’t know whether the world is going to work in a way that aligns for us, but we’ll keep trying for a while because it’s gotten under my skin as well.”

Remaining reserved about what could happen next, Christopher confirmed that his team had already stretched out the storylines.

He explained: “It really feels like this thing that we loved and were ready for was taken away more than anything I’ve ever done.

“That’s true for the writers and Marc Webb, with whom I made the show. 

“There’s a sense that it stopped in mid-animation, but we knew a lot of what was going to happen on the other side.

“There’s also the emotional thing going on with the audience reaching out to us and consistently saying, ‘Tell me what happened. When is it coming back?’ It was particularly poignant for us since we were closer than I think most shows get to being ready to go again.

In August 2020, during the global COVID-19 pandemic, Netflix bosses cancelled The Society and another beloved series, I Am Not Okay With This.

At the time, the streaming giant released a statement saying: “We’ve made the difficult decision not to move forward with second seasons of The Society and I Am Not Okay With This.

“We’re disappointed to have to make these decisions due to circumstances created by Covid, and we are grateful to these creators, including Jonathan Entwistle, Christy Hall, Shawn Levy, Dan Levine, Dan Cohen and Josh Barry at 21 Laps Entertainment for I Am Not Okay With This; Chris Keyser, Marc Webb and Pavlina Hatoupis for The Society; and all the writers, casts and crews who worked tirelessly to make these shows for our members around the world.”

Following the streamer’s announcement, actress Kathryn, who played Allie Pressman, took to her social media page to show some appreciation with a live video.

She said: “I just wanted to say thank you to all of the fans that are trending The Society right now.

“I just got the news this morning, and I’m heartbroken, so heartbroken.”

She added: “Save The Society is trending worldwide, and I couldn’t be prouder.

“I couldn’t be prouder. I would like it to be saved too.”

The actress has also starred in other shows such as Gary Unmarried and Big Little Lie.

Gideon, who played Rebecca Gelb, admitted that the news was “a bit of a gut punch,” but believes that “everything happens for a reason.”

The Society is available to stream on Netflix now.
