The series was a contemporary version of the classic TV programme which aired from 1977 to 1984.

It was set at a luxury resort and starred Roselyn Sanchez as Elena Roarke, a descendant of the original series’ Mr. Roarke.

A network statement said: “We were very pleased with Fantasy Island’s fun and escapist creative, which we had hoped would gain strong traction among viewers.

“Sony Pictures Television is an important partner of ours, and we look forward to continuing to work with them on Accused, Alert: Missing Persons Unit, Doc and the upcoming animated series Universal Basic Guys/Hoagie Bros.

“We’d also like to thank Fantasy Island’s cast, led by Roselyn Sánchez, Kiara Barnes and John Gabriel Rodriquez, crew and executive producers Liz Craft, Sarah Fain and Anne Clements for their partnership on the series.”

UK viewers could watch Fantasy Island if they had a high-end VPN to access the network.

The show’s axing is the latest in a string of cancellations.

Yesterday, CBS confirmed it had axed two shows, East New York and the TV adaptation of True Lies.

However, S.W.A.T fans received a shock renewal for a seventh and final season after previously being axed.

Elsewhere, Netflix has axed Rowan Atkinson’s series Man Vs Bee after just one series.
